Voor mensen die chronisch getraumatiseerd zijn, is het leven dikwijls een worsteling. Vaak hebben zij last van sterk uiteenlopende symptomen, die behoren bij verschillende combinaties van psychische stoornissen. Diagnostiek, taxatie en behandeling van deze patiënten kan hierdoor een gecompliceerde en verwarrende opgave zijn.Het belaagde zelf is opgebouwd uit drie delen. De theorie in deel 1 helpt zowel psychologen als patiënten om traumagerelateerde problematiek te herkennen en te begrijpen. Kern van de gedachtegang is dat trauma een dissociatie van de persoonlijkheid inhoudt. De in deel 2 beschreven handelingspsychologie maakt duidelijk welke disfunctionele mentale en gedragsmatige handelingen deze patiënten blijven uitvoeren en welke efficiëntere handelingen nodig zijn om hun traumatisering te boven te komen. Het op deze inzichten gebaseerde behandelingsmodel, beschreven in deel 3, vormt een beproefde leidraad voor therapeuten om hun patiënten zo veilig en effectief mogelijk op hun weg naar herstel te begeleiden.
